REMINDER: THE FOSS CUP IS IN BELLEVUE ON SATURDAY AUGUST 18th.

WANTED:  OLD MARINE DIGEST MAGAZINES 1920’s THRU WORLD WAR II.

QUESTION: WHERE IS BINOUGH BAY THE CANNERY TENDER “HOWKAN” WENT ASHORE THERE IN 1947?

"HOWKAN" ASHORE BUT WHERE IS IT?.

OUR LOGO THANKS TO BILL GARDEN

MARK’S WEATHER REPORT: IT’S TOO HOT.

I SEE POPE AND TALBOT’S OLD TUG THE “PT PIONEER” IS FOR SALE IN CANADA FOR $ 169,000. SHE IS NOW CALLED THE PACIFIC PIONEER AND IT LOOKS LIKE THEY FIXED HER UP REALLY NICE AND SPENT A LOT OF MONEY ON HER. WHEN SHE WAS BUILT SHE HAD A 260 HP WASHINGTON AND WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE SUCCESSOR TO BOYER’S “SUSAN H”. FRANK PROTHERO BUILT BOTH OF THEM ON LAKE UNION.

WE GOT TO SEE THEM BRING IN THE FIRST BRIDGE PONTOON FROM GRAYS HARBOR – QUITE A SIGHT! MANSON’S “PETER M” DID THE TOWING FROM GRAYS HARBOR AND WE WATCHED HER ON THE AIS COME UP THE COAST AT A LITTLE BETTER THEN 4 KNOTS.  SHE WAS DOWN TO 2.5 KNOTS OFF POINT WILSON ON THE EBB. THE “NANCY M” AND THE “MUD CAT” BROUGHT THE PONTOON  IN THRU THE LOCKS WITH WESTERN’S “WASP” HELPING HER MAKE THE SHARP CORNERS. THEY STOPPED OUTSIDE THE LOCKS AND A GENERAL CRANE BARGE REMOVED THE DEEP SEA GEAR. THE 2ND PONTOON CAME IN TUESDAY MORNING BUT IT WAS A MUCH SMALLER ONE. THE “NANCY M” IS THE EX “SHELLEY FOSS” – SO FAR MANSON HAS PUT A SET OF CONTOLS ON TOP OF THE PILOT HOUSE BUT I EXPECT A TOWER IS IN HER FUTURE; AND, THEY BUILT A HUGE SET OF PUSH KNEES FOR HER. DON HOGUE, A MOORAGE CUSTOMER AND LONG TIME FRIEND, DESIGNED HER FOR FOSS. DON ALWAYS KIDS ABOUT FOSS LETTING AN 18 YEAR OLD KID DESIGN HER BUT SHE HAS BEEN A REAL SUCCESS. THEY ARE A LITTLE LATE IN THE YEAR FOR OUTSIDE TOWING OF BRIDGE PONTOONS. WHEN I WAS RUNNING MOTOR LIFEBOATS FOR THE COAST GUARD AT WESTPORT THE BIG SWELL CAME ON ABOUT THE MIDDLE OF AUGUST.  I WOULD COME OFF LIBERTY AND TAKE THE 1600 TO DARK BAR PATROL AND I WOULD KNOW THAT IT HAD ALL CHANGED AND WINTER WAS JUST AROUND THE CORNER.

MARGIE’S SISTER, ELLEN, CAME A-VISITING FROM NEW JERSEY AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE GOT TO DO WAS FIRE UP THE “BLUEBERRY” AND GO WATCH THE BLUE ANGELS. THEY FLEW LOW ENOUGH OVER US SO THAT WE COULD SEE THEIR FACES. MARGIE ALWAYS REMARKS THAT THE NOISE THAT THE JETS MAKE IS THE SOUND OF FREEDOM AND I THINK THAT SHE IS DEAD ON. WE ALSO GOT A TOOT ON THE WHISTLE FROM A MANSON CRANE BARGE AS WE THREADED OUR WAY THRU ALL OF THE FLOATING EQUIPMENT JUST SOUTH OF THE WEST SIDE OF THE 520 BRIDGE. WHAT FUN! OLD TIME STUFF – FLASHING DECK LIGHTS AT NIGHT, TOOTING THE WHISTLE, ALL GOOD STUFF ON THE WATER. YOU DON’T SEE MUCH OF THAT ON SHORE, MOST NIGHTS WHEN THE “ISLAND BREEZE” COMES IN WITH HER HUGE  GRAVEL BARGE MARGIE GOES OUT AND GIVES THEM A BIG WAVE AND UNLESS THEY ARE REAL BUSY WITH TRAFFIC WE GET A WAVE BACK; OR A SEARCHLIGHT FLASHES IF IT’S AFTER DARK. IT’S KINDA LIKE DRIVING ON LOPEZ ISLAND AND EVERY ONE WAVES.

ALSO CAPT. TOM AND CAPT.ERIK TOOK THE FOSS 300 STEAM CRANE BARGE DOWN TO THE NEW MUSEUM IN THE SOUTH END OF LAKE UNION TO INSTALL A WONDERFUL OLD TIME CLOCK. LATER THEY TOWED THE FOSS 300 INTO BALLARD TO PUT A COUPLE OF VERY LARGE DOCUMENTED VESSELS INTO THE WATER. THE FIRST ONE WEIGHED 140 TONS AND SO NESS BROUGHT ONE OF THEIR CRANES TO THE SITE SO THAT THEY COULD SHARE THE LOAD WITH THE 300. RISKY BUSINESS BUT IT ALL WENT JUST LIKE CLOCK WORK.

THEY WERE SHIFTING THE “ELSBETH III” AT STABBERT’S AND SHE IS A VERY INTERESTING  OCEAN GOING TUG. SHE IS BUILT REAL HIGH IN THE BOW BUT IS SHALLOW DRAFT SO THAT SHE CAN GET IN AND OUT OF THESE THIN SPOTS AND TRIPPLE SCREW WITH THREE MITSUBISHI DIESEL ENGINES.

RIC SHREWSBURY HAS SOLD THE “FEARLESS” AND THE NEW OWNERS DROPPED BY TO SAY HELLO. THEY KEEP HER IN STEAMBOAT SLOUGH BEHIND EVERETT.

THERE IS A BRAND NEW TV SHOW ON CALLED ‘GREAT LAKES WARRIORS’. IT IS ALL ABOUT TUGBOATING ON THE GREAT LAKES. THE SET OF LAKES IS ALL FRESH WATER BUT IT CAN GET VERY ROUGH VERY QUICKLY AND BECOME A VERY NASTY PLACE.  UNFORTUNATELY  THIS IS A REALITY SHOW AND THE PRODUCERS HAVE TWISTED NORMAL TOWING INTO WHAT THEY THINK IS A SCARY, FUN-TO-WATCH TV SHOW.  HOWEVER, IT IS FUN  TO SEE ALL THOSE TUGS CHARGING AROUND. OUR DEFINITION OF TUGBOATING IS DAYS OF BOREDOM PUNCUATED BY MOMENTS OF SHEER  TERROR.

CAPTAIN MARK FREEMAN’S “RUDDERLESS” FOR AUGUST, 2012.

WE  HAVE MOORAGE FOR YEAR-ROUND BOATS AND ONE BOAT FOR SALE….AND ONE BOAT, THE “ON-TIME” FOR CHARTER FOR LAKE UNION CRUISES.

“FATHOM’S PRICE HAS BEEN REDUCED TO $29,995.00 AND THE OWNER SAYS SELL HER SO MAKE ME AN OFFER THAT I CAN TAKE TO HIM.        ERIK.

WANTED: OLD MARINE DIGEST MAGAZINES LIKE FROM 1920 TO AFTER WORLD WAR II. I WANT TO USE SOME OF THE STORIES ABOUT TUGS IN MY SCRAP BOOKS. I HAVE MOST OF THE ISSUES AFTER WWII AND HAVE ALREADY PUT THEM IN THE BOOKS. I HAVE 24″ X 18″ SCRAPBOOKS THAT BEGIN IN THE LATE 1800’s AND I AM BUILDING THE 1994 BOOK NOW.

I ALSO AM LOOKING FOR THE LOCATION OF BINOUGH BAY. IT WAS THERE THAT THE CANNERY TENDER “HOWKAN” WENT ASHORE WHILE TOWING A FISH SCOW IN APRIL OF 1947. I BOUGHT A COLLECTION OF BUD McCARTY’S PHOTOS WHICH SHOW THE “HOWKAN” BEING SALVAGED. I THINK THAT IT IS IN THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS BECAUSE IT SHOWS BUD’S TUG THE “MARY FRANCES” AND RAY STICKLER’S TUG THE “ROSE” WORKING ON THE WRECK. IF IT HAD BEEN IN CANADA THEY WOULD NOT HAVE LET A COUPLE OF YANKEE TUGS WORK UP THERE AND IT IS NOT IN ALASKA BECAUSE THAT IS TOO FAR FROM HOME – WHICH WAS LAKE UNION. I WILL INCLUDE A COUPLE OF PHOTOS BUT I HAVE ABOUT 20 DIFFERENT SHOTS MADE INTO 8X10’s POSTED IN THE HALLWAY PICTURE WALL. THEY GOT HER UP AND THE POWER SCOW “BLUEBIRD” TOWED HER TO A SHIPYARD FOR DRYDOCKING. ANY IDEAS – KEITH OR CLIFFORD ALAN?

“HOWKAN” AND FISH SCOW ASHORE.

"HOWKAN" ASHORE, BUT WHERE?

OUR BLOG LOGO THANKS TO BILL GARDEN AND JOHNNY ADAMS.

MARK’S WEATHER REPORT. WELL LIKE I SAID IT ALWAYS RAINS TO OR THRU THE 4TH OF JULY.  THE SUN CAME OUT ON THE 4th AND IT HAS BEEN KINDA SUMMERY EVER SINCE. HAD FOG UP IN THE LAKE A COUPLE OF MORNINGS AND MARGIE SAID ON THE WAY TO WORK “WELL FALL IS HERE.” AND I NOTICE THEY ARE ADVERTISING FALL CLOTHES AND BACK TO SCHOOL  – WHAT NO CHRISTMAS?

MARITIME NEWS:

"PATHFINDER" AFTER THE GROUNDING WHEN SHE WAS TOWED IN FROM ALASKA TO LUDD. MARK FREEMAN PHOTO.

CROWLEY’S “PATHFINDER” HAS BEEN OFFERED FOR SALE THRU MARCON MINIMUM BID IS $350,000. AS IS, WHERE IS. SHE WENT AGROUND NEAR VALDEZ, I THINK, ON BLIGH’S REEF IN 2009.

I RECEIVED A NOTE FROM CAPTAIN JIM BENNET ABOUT THE “EXPRESS” SHE WINTERED IN PORT ORCHARD AT THOMPSON’S PILE DRIVING. JOHN CLUTTER OWNS HER NOW AND HE JUST ADDED AN UPPER PILOT HOUSE. SHE IS NOW HEADED FOR ALASKA AS A CANNERY TENDER.

MARINE RESOURCES GROUP HAS CHANGED ITS NAME TO FOSS MARINE HOLDINGS.

THE CANADIAN TUG “SEACAP VII” SUNK IN THE FRASER RIVER WITH NO LOSS OF LIFE WHILE THE RIVER WAS IN FULL FLOOD RUNNING AT 8 KNOTS.

THERE IS A NEW TV SHOW ON TUGBOATS ON THE GREAT LAKES THAT SHOULD BE FUN. IT’S ON THE HISTORY CHANNEL AND STARTED ON JULY 19 AT 10 PM.  GRANDPA FITZ WORKED ON THE GREAT LAKES BEFORE BRINGING HIS FAMILY TO SEATTLE IN 1904.

RON BURCHETT WON FIRST PLACE IN THE SMALL BOAT CLASS AT THE NORTHWEST RADIO CONTROLLED SHIP MODELERS CLUB MEET AT BELLEVUE WITH THE TUG “ALAN B”.

RIC SHREWSBURY SENT IN PHOTOS OF THE RIG TUG “AIVIQ” LEAVING VIGOR  SHIPYARD WITH THE DRILL RIG “KULLUK” IN TOW BOUND FOR THE ARCTIC. THEY HELPED HIM GET UNDERWAY AND  RIC & BOB’S TUG “GULF TITAN” ESCORTED HER TO NEAH BAY.

STEVE HUMPHRIES BROUGHT IN SEVERAL OLD TIME BOAT PHOTOS THAT WERE DAVE UPDIKE’S, HIS STEP-DAD.  THANKS STEVE! I WILL SHARE THEM WITH YOU OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS.

HAD A GREAT TURNOUT FOR THE FIREWORKS DISPLAY; EVERYONE WAS USING THEIR BOATS TO WATCH THE SHOW. WE HIRED OUR USUAL POLICE OFFICER FOR CROWD CONTROL AS 50,000  PEOPLE WALK BY OUR FRONT DOOR. ONLY HAD TO THROW OUT ONE VERY DRUNK MAN THAT WAS HEADED FOR THE  DRINK! ERIK TOOK CARE OF THAT PROBLEM. THANKS TO ALL THAT HELPED MAKE IT A GREAT CELEBRATION.

 CROSSING THE BAR.

I LOST TWO GOOD FRIENDS RECENTLY:  JACK SMITH DIED IN JUNE.  JACK RAN THE EVERETT MARINE WAYS FOR A LONG TIME AND WHEN HE WOULD COME TO OUR MARINE STORE,  HE ALWAYS STOPPED BY TO SAY HELLO – AND I ALWAYS CALLED HIM MR. SMITH. HIS FAVORITE TUG WAS THE “MARY D HUME”.

WE LOST OUR LONG TIME FRIEND, ROB PATERSON – OLD TIME GIG HARBOR RESIDENT AND OUR CRUISING PARTNER OF MANY YEARS.

 JON ROBIN PATERSON  1934-2012

Robin crossed the bar on June 27, 2012.

None of us can remember exactly when we met – some time in the mid-1970’s. We certainly recognized a common love of tugboats – and ice cream.

He was our friend and we laughed together for years sharing photos and history along the way. We cruised with he and Kae from Nanaimo to Olympia, with countless unforgettable moments of glee. Flying down to buy the “Sovereign”; buying and selling the tug “HOH” together – that was fun. We talked endless hours about tugboats and our experiences in the United States Coast Guard and best of all we got to kid each other. We were born in the same year but I never could figure out who was older or younger it depended on what we were discussing and who was the old timer that knew all or who was the young whippersnapper with new fresh ideas but it was always fun. He and Kae came to our wedding and photographed our day and danced with us until late. He and my son, Erik, were forever harassing each other. Let’s says there were many water wars. Robin and Erik were in a rowboat race in Chemainus where Erik, the rower, had a sack over his head and Robin gave rowing instructions; I don’t think that they won the race, I’m not sure they got across the finish line, but they sure had fun. Robin would do anything to get a better photo, he made sure that he was up real early in the morning when I had to have one of our tugs tow the “A-1″ back to Seattle from Pete’s place because of a broken head gasket. I even got to see the photos and he kidded me about that for the rest of our days.

Robin was a Deputy Sheriff with Pierce County for 30 years. He co-authored the book “Mosquito Fleet of South Puget Sound” about the steamers that used to ply our waters. He had a great photo collection and I could call him for info about old boats and usually get a photo too. He & Kae bought the “JOE FOSS” and put a new cabin on her and towed and cruised for 25 years with her putting her back in her Foss colors of green and white; she was his fourth tug. the other three were the “BAYBURN”, the “SOUND” and the “WINIMAC”.  Robin and Kae lived in and fixtures of Gig Harbor. Robin was always interested in the maritime history and was a strong supporter of the Tacoma Seaport Museum and the Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society. He was the founder and still President of the IRTA – the International Retired Tug Association – for over 30 years.

He is survived by his wife, Kae, of 53 years, son Doug (Dorene), daughter Jana (Stuart) and seven grandchildren. A memorial service was held at 2 PM Sunday, July 22nd, at the Foss Waterway Seaport, 705 Dock Street, in Tacoma. Memorial donations may be made in Robin’s name to the Foss Waterway Seaport or the Jane Thompson Russell Cancer Care Center, P.O. Box 1502, Tacoma, WA 98401.

Margie & I attended the services and there must have been 350 people there. It was a wonderful but sad service with presentation of the flag from the Pierce County Sheriffs to Kae, bag pipes wailing Amazing Grace, wonderful stories from Robin’s son and daughter about a fine Dad and glimpses of his other friendships from so many.  We will miss Robin.  See you on the other side, my friend.

SHE WAS VERY BUSY DURING WW II BUT WORK SLACKED OFF FOR HER AFTER THE WAR. SHE HAD A STEAM BOILER SO SHE WAS VERY HANDY FOR GETTING THE ANCHOR UP ON DEAD SHIPS. SHE WAS SOLD FOR SCRAP AND THEY TRIED TO TAKE HER DOWN THE COAST BUT THAT DIDN’T WORK AND FOSS TOWED  HER BACK. THEN SHE WAS SOLD TO STERNOFF METALS WHO IN TURN SOLD HER TO UPDIKE AND VALLENTYNE. I REMEMBER DAVE TELLING THE STORY ABOUT THE OLD ENGINEERS SAYING YOU WOULD NEVER GET HER RUNNING-  WELL THEY JUST LOWERED A BUCKET FULL OF RAGS SOAKED IN STARTING FLUID DOWN ONE OF THE INTAKES AND HIT THE AIR AND SHE WAS RUNNING. THEY KEPT HER FOR A FEW YEARS AND THEN SCRAPPED HER.
HERE IS THE TUG “LEWISTON”. DAD BOUGHT HER SURPLUS FROM THE ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS IN PORTLAND. SHE HAD A PAIR OF 140 HP CHRYSLER ROYAL GAS ENGINES WITH A 2.5: 1 REDUCTION GEAR. PHOTO AROUND 1960

DAVE UPDIKE MASTER DIVER.
FAMOUS OLD TUG “KATY”  BUILT IN 1886 FOR THE U.S. COAST & GEODETIC SURVEY. SHE HAD A 250 HP STEAM ENGINE. LATER SHE GOT A 250 HP UNION GAS ENGINE. AFTER THAT HER GAS ENGINE WAS MADE INTO A SEMI DIESEL OF ABOUT 300 HP BY PUTTING ON STROUD HEADS AND CHANGING THE INSIDE OF THE ENGINE. OTIS SHIVELY OWNED HER FOR YEARS FINALLY BURNING HER IN 1953 FOR THE METAL IN HER HULL.   MY FAVORITE STORY ABOUT SHIVELY WAS WHEN MY DAD HIRED HIM AND HIS BIG WOOD BARGE TO GO TO BREMERTON AND GET A BUNCH OF SURPLUS BOATS THAT WOULD NOT FLOAT. JACK McCRARY WENT WITH HIM AND  SHIVELY MADE A PIE ON THE WAY.  HIS HANDS WERE BLACK WHEN HE STARTED ON THE PIE CRUST AND WHITE WHEN HE WAS DONE THE PIE SHELL WAS BLACK . JACK WAS OFFERED A PIECE OF THE FRESH PIE BUT COULD NOT MAKE HIMSELF EAT IT, THERE WERE HUNDREDS OF STORIES ABOUT SHIVE AND THE KATY.

TUG “APOKAK” 110 HP WESTERN ENTERPRISE DIESEL OWNED BY ABNER SUND. THIS PHOTO TAKEN IN 1929 ON THE 4TH OF JULY. ABNER WAS ON HIS WAY TO HOODS CANAL FOR A LOG TOW. THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN IN FRONT OF THE OLD FOSS PIER IN BALLARD ON THE NORTH SIDE. THE THREE TUGS ARE FROM OUTBOARD TO INBOARD THE “MARY FRANCES” THE “ROUSE”, WHICH BECAME THE “WALLACE FOSS”, AND THE “WINONA”, WHICH BECAME THE “HAZEL FOSS”.  FOSS INFORMATION FROM MIKE SKALLEY,FOSS HISTORIAN. THE OLD “EXPRESS” WHAT SHE IS DOING WITH TWO SAILBOAT MASTS I DON’T KNOW. SHE STARTED HER LIFE IN 1913 AS THE PORTLAND FIREBOAT “DAVID CAMPBELL”. IN 1929 SHE WAS CONVERTED BY LAKE UNION DRYDOCK INTO A FREIGHTER WITH A LARGE HOLD BUILT INTO HER AND HER STEAM POWER WAS REPLACED. HER NEW OWNER KANAGA RANCHING CO. WAS GOING TO SUPPLY FOX FARMS IN THE ALUETIANS BUT THAT ONLY LASTED FOR 3 YEARS. PETROLEUM NAVIGATION CO USED HER AS AN OIL TANKER, IN 1955 SHE WAS BOUGHT BY UPPER COLUMBIA RIVER TOWING AND THEY OVERHAULED THE 220 HP WASHINGTON ESTEP DIESELS AND INSTALLED A TOW WINCH AND MADE A TUG OUT OF HER FOR OCEAN TOWING BETWEEN COOS BAY OREGON AND LOS ANGELES. THINK OF THAT 440 HP IN AN OCEAN TOWING TUG AND SHE WAS VERY GOOD AT WHAT WHE DID REMEMBERING THAT THE HORSEPOWER IS IN THE PILOT HOUSE. MY DAD “DOC” ALMOST BOUGHT HER AND THE “CHEROKEE” BUT THAT WAS WHEN HE GOT SICK SO IT NEVER HAPPENED. IN THE 1960s SHE WAS CONVERTED TO A CRABBER. IN 1973 TOM KENT BOUGHT HER AND REPLACED THE TWIN ENGINES WITH A COUPLE OF 600HP COOPER BESSEMER DIESELS AND HE DID ALL KINDS OF TOWING WITH HER BUT I HAVE LOST TRACK OF HER UNTIL ERIK GAVE ME THIS PHOTO.

HERE IS A PHOTO OF THE OLD DAYS  – ABOUT 1938.  WE ARE LIVING IN THE FERRY “AIRLINE” ON THE LEFT IN THE BACK. DOCK 4 IS WHERE ALL THE OLD BOATS ARE TIED UP. WHAT LOOKS LIKE AN ABANDONED HULK IS JUST THAT BUT MY DAD “DOC” OWNED IT.  RUSS GIBSON HIS SOON TO BE PARTNER SOLD IT TO HIM FOR $75.00. SHE IS THE OLD TIME PASSENGER BOAT “SPEEDER”. HE REBUILT IT, CUT THE ROTTEN STERN OFF HER, INSTALLED A CHRYSLER ROYAL GAS ENGINE 140 HP  WITH A 4 1/2:1 REDUCTION GEAR WHICH SWUNG A 38 INCH WHEEL.  HE BUILT HER INTO A VERY MODERN PASSENGER CARRYING BOAT. SHE CARRIED WAR WORKERS TO TODD’S SHIPYARD FROM THE FOOT OF WASHINGTON STREET FOR JOE BOLES AND LYNN CAMPBELL. SHE WAS 77 FEET LONG AND 11 FEET WIDE. IF YOU WERE 2 FEET OFF THE DOCK WHEN YOU LANDED THAT’S WHERE YOU STAYED – TALK ABOUT NOT WANTING TO TURN. I MADE A LOT OF TRIPS ON HER AS DECK HAND AS SHE KEPT COMING BACK INTO OUR OWNERSHIP. THE LAST  PLACE THAT I SAW HER WAS IN REID HARBOR AND SHE WAS ANCHORED UP BUT AWASH.

I AM TRYING TO PLAY CATCH UP AND GET THE APRIL ISSUE OUT IN APRIL BUT WE WILL SEE HOW THE TIME GOES.  IT STARTED RAINING AGAIN SO WE MIGHT GET GOOD PROGRESS?

OUR NEW LOGO. THANKS TO BILL GARDEN AND JOHNNY ADAMS.

I AM LOOKING FOR INFORMATION AND PHOTOS OF THE GOVERNMENT MOORINGS AT KENNEYDALE ON LAKE WASHINGTON AFTER WORLD WAR II.   THEY HAD A LOT OF SURPLUS BOATS TIED UP THERE AND MY DAD “DOC” USED TO BID ON THE BOATS THAT WERE TIED UP THERE.  WHEN WE WERE HIGH BIDDER,  I GOT TO GO ALONG AND HELP TOW THEM HOME. I THINK IT WAS NEAR THE OLD BARBEE MILL SITE.
 EMAIL ME AT mark@fremonttugboat.com  THANKS.

WE HAVE SOME MOORAGE SPACE AVAILABLE FOR YEAR-ROUND BOATS, EASY ON AND OFF YOUR BOAT FROM NICE LOW DOCKS. OUR MOORAGE OFFICE IS ON THE PREMISES AT LAKE LEVEL. THIS IS AN OLD-TIME, HANDS ON FAMILY BUSINESS – WE HAVE BEEN HERE SINCE 1916.  THERE ARE PEOPLE AROUND ALL THE TIME – BETWEEN US  AND THE LIVEABOARDS AND THE TUG COMPANY CREWS THAT COME AND GO AT ALL HOURS.   WE COMMUTE TO OUR FLOATING HOME VIA A SMALL TUG, SO THIS IS NOT ONE OF THOSE LONELY PLACES: THE COFFEE POT IS ALWAYS ON.   WE ALSO HAVE A WONDERFUL SERVICE CALLED PUMP ME OUT THAT TAKES CARE OF YOUR HOLDING TANKS : NON-LIVEABOARDS ARE FREE HERE!
SEE OUR DIFFERENT FACEBOOK ACCOUNTS!

WE ALSO  HAVE A  SMALL OFFICE COMING AVAILABLE IN MAY IN OUR ON-SITE OFFICE BUILDING. CALL MARGIE –  SHE IS IN CHARGE 206 632-0152; OR,  HER CELL IS 206 786-2897.

WEATHER REPORT FROM OUR ON SCENE REPORTER, “CAPTAIN MARK” .  THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW REALLY NICE DAYS AND THEN IT STARTS RAINING AGAIN. MY DAD “DOC” ALWAYS SAID THAT IT RAINS THRU THE 4TH OF JULY AND MY BROTHER-IN-LAW, PAT STOPPELMAN, SAYS THAT THERE ARE TWO SEASONS WINTER AND AUGUST. I’M ALWAYS HOPING THAT THEY ARE MISTAKEN…

APRIL HAS BEEN A BUSY MONTH SOMETIMES I THINK I SHOULD JUST FORGET THE BLOG BUT I GET A REAL KICK OUT OF PUTTING IT OUT AND ALL THE NEAT STUFF THAT PEOPLE SEND ME. WE HAD A MAJOR FAILURE IN MY COMPUTER. I HAD SAVED ABOUT 250 OLD TO NEW E-MAILS –  THE ONES THAT I REALLY LIKED AND THEY ALL WENT AWAY. GONE. KAPUT.  AND NO ONE – NOT EVEN THE SMART GUYS  CAN FIND THEM. MARGIE SAYS THAT THERE IS A BETTER WAY AND SHE WILL SHOW ME. I NORMALLY TRANSFER ALL PHOTOS THAT COME IN TO MY HARDDRIVE AND WE BACK THAT UP ONCE A WEEK ONTO AN EXTERNAL HARDDRIVE THAT LIVES AT HOME. THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT I HAD LOST STUFF SINCE I HAVE BEEN PLAYING WITH THE COMPUTERS.
WE TRIED TO HAVE A BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR TOM BUT TOWING JOBS GOT IN THE WAY SO WE SPREAD IT OUT OVER 3 DAYS AT LUNCH TIME WITH  DIFFERENT PEOPLE EACH DAY.
WE DID MANAGE TO HAVE A SMALL,  REALLY FUN BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR HEIDI – ERIK’S WIFE. TOWING JOBS MAGICALLY WERE BEFORE AND AFTER.

FREMONT TUGBOAT COMPANY:
ANOTHER BUSY MONTH.  LIKE I SAID, WE MISSED TOM’S BIRTHDAY PARTY 3 TIMES IN A ROW.  BUT AS MY OLD DAD “DOC” USED TO SAY BETTER TO BE BUSY.  BOY WAS HE RIGHT.  BETWEEN TOWING JOBS AND DRYDOCKING  WE HAVE BEEN FULLY OCCUPIED.  WE DID THE “GRACES” BOTTOM AND RIGHT AFTER HER WE TOOK THE “JEEP” OUT FOR A SHAVE AND A HAIRCUT.

BELOW IS OUR MAN IN SEATTLE – A YOUNG CAPTAIN MARK AND HIS SISTER, MERRY, SITTING ON HIS FIRST TUG THE “SEAL ROCK”. SHE WAS A NAVY ROUND-SIDED DORY WITH A ‘HUGE’ 8 H.P. UNIVERSAL FISHERMAN SINGLE CYLINDER GAS ENGINE.

MARK & HIS SISTER MERRY SITTING ON THE "SEAL ROCK" MARK'S FIRST TUG.

I FOUND THIS OLD PHOTO OF TWO OF MY TUGS THE “STOKER” AND THE “MANILA”.  THE “STOKER” HAD A NAVY BUDA DD 105 HP AND I CHANGED THAT FOR A 150 HP FORD DIESEL.  WHEN I BOUGHT THE “MANILLA” FROM BOB BURNS, SHE HAD A 60 HP ATLAS.  I TOOK THAT OUT AND ALL I COULD AFFORD WAS A 140 HP CHRYSLER ROYAL WITH A 4.5:1 GEAR. LATER I PUT A 6-71 GM 180 HP ON A 3:1 GEAR AND THAT REALLY KICKED THE TIDE OUT FROM UNDER HER.

CAPTAIN MARK FREEMAN’S “RUDDERLESS” FOR MARCH 21, 2012

BOAT MOORAGE AND OFFICES FOR RENT… AND ONE BOAT FOR SALE.

“FATHOM” IS FOR SALE.

I AM SORRY WE GOT SO LATE ON THIS ISSUE BUT WE GOT SWAMPED WITH BUSINESS AND ISN’T THAT A GOOD EXCUSE! I WILL TRY TO GET THE NEXT ISSUE OUT SOONER, BUT THE SUN IS OUT NOW…

OUR OLD HOME & SHOP THE PUGET SOUND FERRY “AIRLINE” THE COAST GUARD TOOK HER FOR A BARRACKS SHIP AT THE START OF WW II.

We have some moorage space available for year-round boats, easy on and off your boat from low floating docks. Our moorage office is on the premises at lake level. This is an old-time, hands-on family business and there are people around all the time – between us and the liveaboards and the tug company crews that come and go at all hours. We commute to our floationg home via a small tug, so this is not one of those lonely places: the coffee pot is always on. We also have free sewage pump-outs for non-liveaboard customers through a wonderful service called PumpMeOut. We have been here since 1916. See our different Facebook accounts.
We have a few small offices coming available in our on-site office building . Call Margie she is in charge 206 632-0152 or her cell is 206 786-2897.

WEATHER REPORT FROM OUR ON SCENE REPORTER “CAPTAIN MARK”.  Bah humbug it is still winter, worst spring for a long time.

MARCH IS MY MONTH – I HAD ANOTHER BIRTHDAY. WE HAD A NICE SMALL GATHERING AND OF COURSE THE TUGS WERE WORKING AND ERIK MISSED THE WHOLE PARTY AS HE WAS OUTSIDE THE LOCKS ASSISTING A STABBERT RESEARCH BOAT; JUST A SMALL 200 FOOTER. SO HE HAD A GOOD EXCUSE AND TOM  GOT HERE FOR PART OF IT.  I REMEMBER WE HAD A BIG BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR ERIK WHEN HE TURNED 21; BUT AGAIN HE MISSED IT ARRIVING BACK IN THE YARD AT 2100 BUT MARGIE AND I WERE STILL HERE WITH A LIGHT IN THE WINDOW.

WE RECEIVED QUITE A BIT OF INFO ON THE “PACIFIC HUNTER” WHICH IS LAYING AT LUDD.  SHE WAS THE FORMER USCG CUTTER “EWING” WSC 137 BUT SO FAR I HAVEN’T BEEN ABLE TO DIG UP ANY INFO ON THE SEA TREK LAYING AT FISHERMEN’S TERMINAL BUT WE ARE NOT GIVING UP AT THIS POINT.

FREMONT TUGBOAT COMPANY:

ANOTHER BUSY MONTH FOR THEM THEY HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THE GRACE IN BETWEEN TOWING JOBS AND DRYDOCKINGS. THEY HAD THE BARGE FT 4519 OUT OF WATER AT CSR AND GAVE HER A NICE BOTTOM JOB IN BETWEEN RAIN STORMS.  THEN WAITED A WEEK FOR WEATHER AND PULLED THE “DIXIE ” OUT OF WATER FOR A SHAVE AND A HAIRCUT. I CAN’T  REALLY BELIEVE THIS BUT THEY ARE PAINTING ON THE BOTTOM OF THE “DIXIE” AND THE SUN IS SHINING.  OUR GUYS WOULD MAKE GREAT LOG TOWERS THEY CAN REALLY GUESS THE WEATHER, MAYBE THEY CAN GET A JOB AT DUNLAP IN THEIR SPARE TIME–WHAT SPARE TIME?

OUR MAN IN SEATTLE: A YOUNG CAPT. MARK TRYING TO OUT-WRESTLE A PEELER BLOCK IN TRIANGLE COVE. CIRCA 1953.

A MILL IN EVERETT CALLED ME ABOUT THREE MISSING FIR PEELER LOGS THAT HAD DRIFTED  INTO TRIANGLE COVE, I THINK OSCAR JOHNSON REFERRED ME TO THEM. I RAN UP THERE WITH THE “JERKMORE” AND DAD & MOTHER &  JACK MCCRARY MET ME THERE WITH LOGGING JACKS. WE GOT THE LOGS TURNED PARALLEL TO THE BEACH AND DUG A HOLE UNDER THE BIG END AND I WAS ABLE TO ROLL THEM INTO THE WATER AT HIGH TIDE AND THEN I TOWED THEM TO EVERETT.

RICK NORTON SENT IN THIS PHOTO OF THE “GRANT DIXON I” BEING LAUNCHED AT KETTLE FALLS ON LAKE ROOSEVELT. WE KNOW HER AS OUR TUG “DIXIE”.  HOWARD DOLPH BUILT THE TUG HULLS AT POST FALLS AND THEN TRANSPORTED THEM TO KETTLE FALLS TO BE FITTED OUT AND LAUNCHED WHERE THEY WOULD TOW LOGS TO THE MILLS AT KETTLE FALLS. THANKS RICK!

“JOURNEYMAN II” WAS MY DAD’S LAST BOAT BEFORE HE DIED. SHE WAS A SALTY BILL GARDEN DESIGNED YACHT. DAD PAINTED HER UP IN HIS GREEN AND BLACK AND ORANGE COLORS AND HE LOVED HER. HE AND MOTHER TOOK HER OUT TO THE CAPE AND GOT TWO TRIPS  INTO CANADA WITH HER  BEFORE HE GOT SICK. I SOLD HER FOR THE ESTATE AND SHE WENT THRU SEVERAL HANDS BEFORE BEING BOUGHT BY BROOKE ELGIE AND WENDY STERN. THEY TOOK HER TO SE ALASKA, OWNED HER FOR SEVERAL YEARS  AND THEN SOLD HER. WELL SHE WENT THRU A  COUPLE OF DIFFERENT HANDS AND ENDED UP SUNK IN THE BOAT HAVEN AND HER FATE WAS THE LAND FILL – CRUSHED BUT NOT FORGOTTEN. SAD ENDING TO A GREAT BOAT. THANKS BROOKE FOR SENDING ME THE STORY ON HER.

CAPTAIN MARK FREEMAN’S “RUDDERLESS” FOR FEBRUARY 22, 2012

BOAT MOORAGE AND OFFICES FOR RENT PLUS ONE BOAT FOR SALE.

ANOTHER SHOT OF OUR OLD HOME, OFFICE AND SHOP - THE PUGET SOUND FERRY "AIRLINE".

We have some moorage space available for year-around boats, easy on and off your boat on nice low docks with lots of cleats. Our moorage office is on the dock and we are here most of the time. This is a hands-on, old time family business and there arepeople around all the time between us and the liveaboards and the tug company crews that comes and goes at all hours. We commute to our floating home via small tug, so this is not one of those lonely places; the coffee pot is always on. We also have free sewage pump-outs for non-liveaboard customers through a wonderful service called PumpMeOut. We have been in business since 1916. See all the pictures on our Facebook site for Fremont Boat Co. We also have on Facebook: Captain Mark Freeman, Fremont Tugboat Co. and Captain Tom Bulson (Erik’s partner in the Fremont Tugboat Company.)

We have a few small offices coming available in our on-site office building (called the O. H. Doc Freeman building). Call Margie at 206-632-0152 or her cell is 206-786-2897 – she’s in charge.

WEATHER REPORT FROM OUR ON SCENE REPORTER, CAPT. MARK:
AS USUAL, WE GOT FOOLED IN THE FIRST PART OF FEBRUARY, IT WAS REALLY NICE – THE SUN WAS OUT AND WARMED US ALL UP, BUT WE ALL KNOW THAT IT RAINS AND BLOWS THRU THE FORTH OF JULY. IT’S BEEN RAINING AND BLOWING SINCE THE SUN WENT AWAY.

FREMONT TUGBOAT COMPANY:
THEY HAVE BEEN VERY BUSY THIS MONTH PUTTING THE BOAT SHOW TO BED AND GETTING ALL THOSE FLOATS OUT OF WATER AND TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH OUR REGULAR TOWING, BUT THAT’S WHY THEY ARE ALL YOUNG. WE HAD THE “DIXIE” WATCHING A REASEARCH BOAT DO TRIALS ALL WEEK IN SALT WATER. WE EVEN TIED UP AT SHILSHOLE OVERNIGHT. READ ON  ABOUT THE WILD GOOSE CHASE.  THE NEW MANIFOLD ARRIVED – THOSE GUYS ON THE RIGHT COAST ARE ALRIGHT IN MY BOOK AS LONG AS IT’S NOT FOGGY.

OBITUARY FOR AL HERMAN

I was saddened when I found out about the death of my Cousin Al. We had been friends since we were little kids. He lived just on the other side of the Fremont Bridge and we played together and had a great time until he moved to the country upon the remarriage of his mother, Mary, who was my dad’s sister. Sadly we did not get to see each other so much but I know that everything changes and it is lucky that I have such fond memories. I will never forget the ride that I had in his XK-120 Jag down Interlaken Blvd. at 100 mph – he wasn’t scared of anything. I can remember the crows all flying away whenever we entered the woods at the West Valley Highway to hunt them with our loaded 22 cal. rifles – they were way smarter than we were.
We told lots of tugboat stories between us after all those years he put in with Crowley as Chief Engineer. I think we had the most fun on the big lifeboat delivery trip. My dad, Doc, had bought a 24 foot wood lifeboat from the Government and it was on a ship at Todd’s in the West Waterway. It had a mast and boom, sails, oars and bailers and the plan was to put it into the water so we could row across to Magnolia and dad would send Ray Stickler out with the tug VAMOOSE to pick us up and tow her back to Fremont Boat. Well the boat leaked and one of us bailed and one rowed and the tide was against us and there was no wind to sail. So we rowed and bailed and finally hours later the VAMOOSE shows on the horizoin, our sandwiches were gone and we were tired of sinking. Seems like Ray had clutch troubles on the 50 hp Atlas and it took him several hours to fix it. Al  and I always thought dad was just getting us ready for bigger and better challenges. The lifeboat was sunk to the rails when we got back to the yard. I just want you to know how much I will miss him, he was 78 – a year older than me so of course he always knew more than I did… typical kids. I have included several photos for you to see.

THIS IS A WILD GOOSE CHASE.
YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SEA STORY AND A FAIRY TALE IS ONE STARTS IN AT “ONCE UPON A TIME” AND THE OTHER STARTS IN NOW THIS IS NO “S*%#X”.
SO ERIK GETS THIS PHONE CALL ON TUESDAY AND ITS SPENCER O’GRADY, MANAGER OF THE FOSS TERMINAL. SPENCE SAYS “ERIK WE HAVE A CANADIAN HONKER STUCK INSIDE ONE OF THE HUGE STEEL PILING ON THE WEST END AND HE CAN’T GET OUT”. SO ERIK AND TOM TAKE THE “JEEP” AND RUN DOWN THERE ON GOOSE PATROL. THERE ARE TWO LARGE 3″ HOLES  CUT IN THE PILING JUST ABOVE WATER LEVEL – PERFECT FOR THE GOOSE TO STICK OUT HIS BEAK AND HONK.  SO, THEY PLUG ONE WITH A DC PLUG AND START UP THE SCOW PUMP AND STICK THE DISCHARGE END IN THE OTHER HOLE AND CAULK IT UP WITH A RAG. THE PUMP RUNS FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES AND MR. GOOSE FLOATS TO THE TOP OF THE PILING AND FLYS AWAY – TO THE HOUSEBARGE ROOF NEXT DOOR. END OF STORY, MISSION COMPLETE, EVERY THING IS JUST DUCKY (GOOSEY?).  SO NOW, HOW IS THAT FOR A SEA STORY?

BOAT MOORAGES AND OFFICES FOR RENT.

OUR NEW LOGO THANKS BILL.

OUR OLD HOME AND OFFICES ON THE FERRY "AIRLINE".

We have some moorage space available for year-around boats, easy on and off your boat on nice low, floating docks with lots of cleats and our moorage office is on the dock and we are here most of the time. This is a hands-on, old time family business  and there are people around all the time between us and the liveboards and the tug company crew that goes and comes at all hours. We commute to our floating home via small tug, so this is not one of thoses lonely places.  The coffee pot is always on. We also have free sewage pump-outs for non-live aboard customers through a wonderful service called PumpMeOut. We have been in business since 1916. See all the pictures on our Facebook site for Fremont Boat Co. We also have on Facebook: Captain Mark Freeman, Fremont Tugboat Co. and Captain Tom Bulson (Erik’s partner in the Tugboat  Company.)

We have a few small offices coming available in our on site office building (called the O.H.”DOC” Freeman Building). Call Margie at 206-632-0152 or her cell is 206-786-2897 – She’s in charge.

WEATHER REPORT FROM OUR ON SCENE REPORTER.

I was right about losing our good weather, wow!  It snowed and blew and rained and ice came down from the sky and froze and flooded and the sun came out too. More tomorrow.

Chuck Fowler and Dan Withers had a power point show at the Museum of History and Industry on Montlake. Margie and I went, of course, and at least another 100 people showed up to hear about the new book PATROL AND RESCUE BOATS ON PUGET SOUND and find out where all those interesting photos came from. Chuck and Dan did a really great job putting the book together. My favorite photo was the PT Boat and the “KALAKALA”. Chuck was introduced by Admiral John Lockwood who is a new Board member of PSMHS.

FREMONT TUGBOAT COMPANY.

Captain Tom and Captain Erik have really been earning their keep as you will see them putting together the Boats Afloat Show floats in a blizzard. Those guys have got what it takes and that includes Al and Jake and Jared everybody really pitched in to get the show going on time. They have been very busy with the fishing fleet as most of the fish boats leave in January after completing their winter voyage repairs.  Bravo Zulu to the Towboat Company!

We have been talking to our friend, Bill Page, in Maine. I guess they have been suffering a normal Maine winter – colder than all get out. He is supposed to complete his new boat that he is building this year. When Margie and I were back east 5 years ago we got to see it. What a thrill that was; it should never be used and should go directly to the museum and forever be a wonderful example of wooden boat building.  Bill has been helping us look for a spare manifold for the ON-TIME and we think he may have one spotted… more info later.

Last issue I asked the question about where the “WALLACE FOSS”  was  going as she had been loaded aboard a big ship. I heard back from Don Medforth of Nanaimo and Mike Scalley of Foss, they both said she was going back east for the new owners in New Hampshire and that her new home port was Newport, Rhode Island. Foss bought Constellation Maritime of Boston and has since renamed the company Foss Maritime and the tugs sent back east were: the ”DAVID FOSS, CATHERINE FOSS, LESLIE FOSS, AND AMERICA.” Foss also owns two local Boston tugs, the “LEO” and the “TUCANA”, so the “WALLACE FOSS” should feel right at home. Don and Mike: thank you for the new info.

AT AROUND 0800 THEY RECEIVED ENEMY FIRE FROM THE JAP PLANES AND WENT TO GENERAL QUARTERS BUT THE JAP PLANES WERE OUT OF RANGE FOR THEIR GUN. FREMONT TUGBOAT COMPANY

Captain Tom and Captain Erik have just been loving this winter – with its light winds it makes their job of towing big fishing vessels just that much eaiser. Last month they had just put the “ON-TIME” back in the water and were running her home when the exhaust manifold cracked. We were all disappointed needless to say. Tom got right on the problem and was able to buy a manifold from the Gray Marine factory. I don’t know where they found it but here comes a 70 pound package in the mail – what a great Christmas present. Tom and Jake installed it and she runs beautifuly. Margie and I got to take her out on her first photo run the day before Christmas. Tom, Erik amd Jake towed a big fishing vessel the “LEGACY” out of Stabbert’s to Pier 91 and we took  the first photos for our blog; plus Margie and I really had a great time.

ON-TIME IN ACTION. TOM BULSON PHOTO.

I am looking for information on the tug “POLAR MERCHANT” She was an ex-USCG 125 foot Cutter. I don’t know which Coast Guard cutter that she was. I need names of owners, etc. and I can’t find anything in the ‘Bible’ on her. I believe Dave Updike scrapped her and I towed her to the north end of Lake Washington once; I also have pictures of her in the tug races but I am at a loss for more info.

It has been a very busy Christmas Season with mailing out 1000 calendars and Christmas cards and just enjoying the season. My blog is extremely late and I don’t know whether to call it the December issue or the January issue we will let Margie decide that.

CAPTAIN MARK FREEMAN’S “RUDDERLESS” FOR NOVEMBER 19, 2011

BOAT MOORAGE AND OFFICES FOR RENT AT FREMONT BOAT COMPANY.

OUR NEW LOGO THANKS TO BILL GARDEN & JOHN ADAMS.

OUR OLD FERRY BOAT "AIRLINE" OUR MOORAGE AND SALES OFFICE, ENGINE SHOP AND HOME CIRCA 1940. THE COAST GUARD TOOK HER FOR A BARRACKS SHIP AT THE START OF WORLD WAR II. WE NOW HAVE A NEWER BUILDING.

We have some moorage space available for year-round boats, easy on and off your boat on nice low, floating docks with lots of cleats and our moorage office is on the dock and we are here most of the time. This is a hands-on, old time family business and there are people around all the time – between us and the liveaboards and the tug company crew that goes and comes at all hours. We commute to our floating home by a small tug, so this is not one of those lonely places. The coffee pot is always on. We also have free sewage pump-outs for non-liveaboard customers through a wonderful service called PumpMeOut. We have been in business since 1916. See all the pictures on our Facebook site for Fremont Boat Co. We also have on facebook, Mark Freeman, Fremont Tugboat Co. and Tom Bulson (Erik’s partner in the Tugboat Co.)  We have a few offices coming available in our on-site office building (called the O.H. Doc Freeman  Building). Call Margie at 206 632 0152 or her cell is 206-786-2897 – she’s in charge.

WEATHER REPORT FOM YOUR ON SCENE REPORTER.

We had wonderful fall weather for October and half of November but looking out yesterday from my office window, downtown Seattle just disappeared in the rain thick skies. Oh well, get your oil skins out. Most mornings the cats greet us from inside the office and BATMAN has taken up permanent residency on Margie’s desk… in the in basket. Today the sun is out and it’s very bright –  wonderful thing about this country is that the weather changes every 12 hours.

A BRAND NEW BOOK –  “PATROL AND RESCUE BOATS ON PUGET SOUND” BY CHUCK FOWLER AND DAN WITHERS.

FRONT COVER OF THE NEW BOOK SHOWS A 38 FOOT COAST GUARD PICKET BOAT.

CG-40501 MARK FREEMAN BM2 RAN HER UP THE COAST FROM GRAYS HARBOR LIFEBOAT STATION FOR PATROL DUTIES AT SEAFAIR IN 1958.

Chuck Fowler, who I worked with on the “Tugboats on Puget Sound” book, has produced another pictorial maritime history volume “Patrol and Rescue Boats on Puget Sound,” scheduled for release on December 12, 2011. His co-author this time is Dan Withers, a Navy Vietnam War destroyer veteran and President of Combatant Craft of America, a nonprofit patrol boat historical and preservation group.

Among the little-known stories and rare images featured in the book are PT (patrol torpedo) boats operating in Puget Sound during World War II, production of the third largest number of WWII Coast Guard picket boats in the nation by a Kirkland boat builder, development of Bellingham-built Navy river patrol boats and hydrofoil patrol boats by Boeing during the Vietnam War era of the 1960’s and 1970’s, and production and operation of Coast Guard fast response boats following the September 11, 2001 homeland terrorist attacks. The book’s many dramatic, previously unpublished photos show that Puget Sound-based boat builders and military maritime units have had important roles in the nation’s patrol and rescue boat history.

As a Coast Guard veteran and former patrol boat skipper, I helped Chuck with his research and provided photos from my collection. These included a photo of
my 40-foot utility boat, CG-40501, when we were assigned safety patrol duties during the 1958 Gold Cup Race on Lake Washington. This was the famous
race when Bill Muncey’s Miss Thriftway collided with another 40-footer, sending both boats to the bottom of the lake and narrowly avoiding any deaths or injuries.
Chuck and Dan’s book features two dramatic photos of this accident, an
aerial view taken shortly after the collision and another when the two sunken
boats were raised by the well-known Coast Guard buoy tender Fir.

For more information or to pre-order your copy of the “Patrol and Rescue Boats on Puget Sound” book visit www.arcadiapublishing.com or call their Toll Free Order Line 1-888-313-2665. The book will also be available at many Puget Sound area book stores after December 12th.

JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS!

There is a very special, brand new Seattle business that just opened its doors on Canal Street. It is called the Fremont Mischief Distillery & Tasting Room. Mike & Patti Sherlock have installed all the equipment necessary for making liquor – really, really good, organic liquor. You have to go see it, even if you don’t drink! They have really creative, unusual things for sale and on display – it’s a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds. Mike has made a special Soldier Commemorative bottle of which a dollar a bottle is donated to help support families of men and women serving in the United States armed services. The dog tag on the side of each bottle are from a fallen soldier.  On the side of the lantern box is printed and I quote:  “It is for us the living to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that from these honored dead we carry increased devotion to that cause for which they so nobly gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain – that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom and that governments of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth  . FREMONT TUGBOAT COMPANY

The boys – Captain Tom and Captain Erik and Mate Jake  – finished up voyage (highway) repairs to the General Lee after her trip to the Columbia River. Capt. Erik got the boat back just in time to take full advantage of her dry, heated pilot house. They had enough time to take the ON-TIME out of water at CSR. We had to re-pitch the wheel, fix the stern bearing, repaint the hull, change the boot stripe to white, put her name on the stern, the numbers on the bow, new zincs and refasten the shoe and the skeg. Tom took the stainless steel rudder up to the shop before it fell apart and rebuilt it. He put a wedge on the back and capture plates top and bottom and 2 bars thru the center for added stiffness. He did such a good job that I took a picture of it, it’s what we do to all rudders. Nice job fellows!!!!!!!! Bravo Zulu to you all.

So, just as we’re feeling pretty smug with all this wonderfulness, we started up the engine and the exhaust manifold cracked  ….since it’s a 1950 or so 109 Gray Marine engine, Tom is on the hunt.  A true boat project.

ON-TIME LOOKING BETTER.

Here are photos that we took of the launching of Western Towboat’s new 5000 H.P. tug the “ARCTIC TITAN”. These boats have been a real success with their huge Z-drives; they can control the landing of the big Lynden barges in bad weather even without an assist tug. They build them in their own land yard across from their office, a house mover rolls them into a waiting Foss drydock and then they tow the drydock into Lake Union where it is lowered and they tow the new boat back to their moorage to be completed.
