THE OLD “EXPRESS” WHAT SHE IS DOING WITH TWO SAILBOAT MASTS I DON’T KNOW. SHE STARTED HER LIFE IN 1913 AS THE PORTLAND FIREBOAT “DAVID CAMPBELL”. IN 1929 SHE WAS CONVERTED BY LAKE UNION DRYDOCK INTO A FREIGHTER WITH A LARGE HOLD BUILT INTO HER AND HER STEAM POWER WAS REPLACED. HER NEW OWNER KANAGA RANCHING CO. WAS GOING TO SUPPLY FOX FARMS IN THE ALUETIANS BUT THAT ONLY LASTED FOR 3 YEARS. PETROLEUM NAVIGATION CO USED HER AS AN OIL TANKER, IN 1955 SHE WAS BOUGHT BY UPPER COLUMBIA RIVER TOWING AND THEY OVERHAULED THE 220 HP WASHINGTON ESTEP DIESELS AND INSTALLED A TOW WINCH AND MADE A TUG OUT OF HER FOR OCEAN TOWING BETWEEN COOS BAY OREGON AND LOS ANGELES. THINK OF THAT 440 HP IN AN OCEAN TOWING TUG AND SHE WAS VERY GOOD AT WHAT WHE DID REMEMBERING THAT THE HORSEPOWER IS IN THE PILOT HOUSE. MY DAD “DOC” ALMOST BOUGHT HER AND THE “CHEROKEE” BUT THAT WAS WHEN HE GOT SICK SO IT NEVER HAPPENED. IN THE 1960s SHE WAS CONVERTED TO A CRABBER. IN 1973 TOM KENT BOUGHT HER AND REPLACED THE TWIN ENGINES WITH A COUPLE OF 600HP COOPER BESSEMER DIESELS AND HE DID ALL KINDS OF TOWING WITH HER BUT I HAVE LOST TRACK OF HER UNTIL ERIK GAVE ME THIS PHOTO.
