LIFEBOAT STATION SAILOR.

         MARCH 1, 2010

First: a big thank you to all the folks that have sent and brought in tugboat pictures. Ron Burchett sent pictures of the MARGUN aground and iced up in Alaska and the brand new Robert Allan-designed and Martinac-built new U.S. Navy ASD tug at Bangor. Don Medforth sent down several Canadian  tug pictures and nice articles on the steam tugs RFM and MASTER. John Kobanuk sent down pictures of several big models of Canadian steam and diesel tugs that he built. Bob Richardson, our man in Coos Bay, sent on more pictures of the Harbor, the Bar and all his friends at Coos Bay.  Capt. Fred Jerrel brought in several calendars that Matt Lyon made and we had a chance for a short BS session.  Thanks to all, I will use them in the blog as soon as possible. When I say “sent down” that is probably a misnomer as most stuff comes into the internet but it is always fun to see the people in person.

Nothing spectacular going on for the tug company; just nice, steady work thanks to our wonderful customers during very hard times. I can show you better with pictures than with talk.  The SHELLEY is looking great in her Manson colors.

I have started my new book; well, okay, actually I started two, but for now I decided to stick with my Coast Guard book.  “LIFEBOAT STATION SAILOR” is the draft name for it and it is about the time that I spent in the Service. It took 6800 words just to get out of boot camp, so I am off and running. I also took lots of pictures (never enough) so it should be fun putting it together. I will need some help from you on this: Arcadia published the last book that Chuck Fowler and I did together ["TUGBOATS ON PUGET SOUND"] but this one I have to learn a lot about how to publish a book that will probably not be on the Times Best Seller list. So any suggestions call me at 206 632 0152 or e–mail me at mark@fremonttugboat.com or my street address is 1059 N Northlake Way Seattle WA. 98103.

Thanks also to Hans at Tugs & Towing Offshore Newsletter for the reprint of the Marine News (link) nice story about my being in business for 50 years. Thank You! You can access their web site at http://www.towingline.com.

Keep sending tugboat pictures,  Fairtide Mark.

PS: Didn’t you just love the Olympics?  The Canadians did a hell of a job providing snow and a wonderful show during a warm winter. Of course I think our Hockey team is just as good as theirs…now that ought to stir the pot just a little, eh.

PPS: We have a house rental coming available 4/1/10 (2 Bdrm, 1 bath) in Broadview….call Margie at 206-786-2897.
