OUR OLD FERRY "AIRLINE" OUR MOORAGE AND SALES OFFICE,ENGINE SHOP AND HOME CIRCA 1940. THE COAST GUARD TOOK HER FOR A BARRACKS SHIP AT THE START OF WORLD WAR II. WE NOW HAVE A NEWER BUILDING.
We have some moorage space available for year around boats, easy on and off your boat on nice low floating docks with lots of cleats and our moorage office is on the dock and we are in the office most of the week. We have clean rest rooms, one with a great shower. We also have free sewage pump outs for non-live aboard customers through a wonderful service called PumpMeOut. We have been in business since 1916. We have a few individual offices coming available in our on site office building, call Margie at 206 632 0152 or her cell is 206-786-2897 – she’s in charge. Everyone in the marina that had a sail boat and participated in the “DUCK DODGES” had a wonderful summer of races and good fellowship and of course no partying. We had a lot of beautiful evenings. We had a small celebration for us on September 20, that was the day my dad “DOC” bought Fremont Boat Market from Cap Webster in 1928. I bought Fremont Boat Company from my folks on September 20, 1959 and Margie has worked for me since September 20, 1979. So the business has been in the family for 83 years and I have owned it for 52 years and Margie has worked for me for 32 years and we have been married for 28 years. Fremont Tug was started in 1915 and Fremont Boat was started in 1916. I sold Erik and Tom the Tug Company in 1995 so they have been at that for 16 years and I have been running tugboats since I was eleven years old; now you can guess how old I am. That’s a hell of a record in these troubled times for a family business to prosper and survive. I have only one thing to say about the whole thing: nothing replaces hard work and I am talking 7 days a week… forever.

Well it was nice for most of September but it immediatly starting raining the minute Margie’s sister, Ellen, showed up for a weeks vacation from New Jersey. So, it’s clear now: goodby Fall, hello Winter. Batman, our roamer cat, knows the weather better than anyone, he is out all spring and summer and we get calls from over on Westlake and up at 45th and Stone Way to ‘come get your cat’. At the first hint of rain he is in the office warm and fat and sassy and greets us from inside – not outside. Smart cat.

Chuck Fowler, who I worked with on the “Tugboats on Puget Sound” book, has produced another pictorial maritime history volume “Patrol and Rescue Boats on Puget Sound,” scheduled for release on December 12, 2011. His co-author this time is Dan Withers, a Navy Vietnam War destroyer veteran and President of Combatant Craft of America, a nonprofit patrol boat historical and preservation group.
Among the little-known stories and rare images featured in the book are PT (patrol torpedo) boats operating in Puget Sound during World War II, production of the third largest number of WWII Coast Guard picket boats in the nation by a Kirkland boat builder, development of Bellingham-built Navy river patrol boats and hydrofoil patrol boats by Boeing during the Vietnam War era of the 1960’s and 1970’s, and production and operation of Coast Guard fast response boats following the September 11, 2001 homeland terrorist attacks. The book’s many dramatic, previously unpublished photos show that Puget Sound-based boat builders and military maritime units have had important roles in the nation’s patrol and rescue boat history.
As a Coast Guard veteran and former patrol boat skipper, I helped Chuck with his research and provided photos from my collection. These included a photo of
my 40-foot utility boat, CG-40501, when we were assigned safety patrol duties during the 1958 Gold Cup Race on Lake Washington. This was the famous
race when Bill Muncey’s Miss Thriftway collided with another 40-footer, sending both boats to the bottom of the lake and narrowly avoiding any deaths or injuries.
Chuck and Dan’s book features two dramatic photos of this accident, an
aerial view taken shortly after the collision and another when the two sunken
boats were raised by the well-known Coast Guard buoy tender Fir.

USCG "FIR" SALVAGING CG-40 BOAT THAT BILL MUNCEY RAN INTO AND SANK IN THE 1958 RACES

The boys – Captain Erik and Captain Tom – get awful busy at this time of the year; along with their regular towing they put the Boats Afloat Show together so all work on the ON-TIME comes to a halt. They also finished the charter in Eastern Washington with the “GENERAL LEE” and she is back at CSR for voyage (highway) repairs. CSR took over the Seaview East site.
Waterfront Construction was building a bulkhead in South Seattle on Puget Sound and lost one of its beach boats. The converted LCM-8 landing barge 73 feet long sank in the middle of the operation. The TV and the Seattle Times all had articles on the “JUSTIN” sinking. As of last nights’ news a 150 ton crane barge had picked her off the bottom and they were placing her on another barge. It reminded me of a no news night they made such a big deal out of it that you would have thought that the “TITANIC” went down. The “JUSTIN” was a real handy work platform. She had spuds on her, a gate that let down so you could drive on and off the beach with equipment, a crane, Detroit Power and a two story house aft. Hope her life continues.
The “HENRY BRUSCO” was towing the 322 foot barge “ST. ELIAS” in Rosario Strait and the barge ran aground on “BELLE ROCK”. Global Diving inspected the barge and found a 10 foot hole in her. One of the problems was that she had thousands of pounds of U.S.NAVY explosives onboard. It was determined that she would not sink and the Foss tug “DELTA LINDSEY” took her alongside and towed her stern first over to Indian Island – a U.S.NAVY ammunition base across from Port Townsend – escorted by the “HENRY BRUSCO” and the 87 foot Coast Guard Cutter “SWORDFISH”. The barge is owned by Samson Tug & Barge of Sitka, Alaska. She, too, will live another day to earn her keep.

CROSSING THE BAR.
I lost another old time friend, Carl Weber. His son, Ed, called me from Eastern Washington and told us that Carl was gone. He had moved to Moses Lake after he had sold the house in Grays Harbor. Carl was a past President of the Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society having served as President in 1976 and also in 1991 and 1992. Carl and I and our wives used to party at King’s Row and at King Oscar’s in the old days and he was always fun. My son, Erik, and I drove to Aberdeen when Carl was selling some of his artifacts and I bought a lot of tugboat stuff and pictures. When he had his business on 85th NW, I also bought a nice model of Margie’s old tug the EXCALIBAR (ex-LE MARS). Carl was also sending me pictures for the blog. His son, Ed, said he would send me the obit info and maybe a picture later and when that arrives I will share it with you.
Leonard T. Campell passed away away on September 20, 2011 in Seattle at the age of 89. Leonard was a long time member of the Alaska and Puget Sound maritime community. During World War II he joined the U.S. Army Transportation Corps serving in Juneau and the Aluetian Islands. After the war Leonard and his dad, Ernest, started Campbell Towing out of Wrangell. Some of the tugs that they had were the ALASCO IV, RAMBLER, KAREN, RICHARD, ROBERT, ERNEST, MOGUL AND L.T. CAMPBELL. In fact the name board off the L.T. CAMPBELL hangs in my office as a nice present from Leonard. He is survived by his wife, Lynne, of 42 years and seven children, fourteen grandchildern and six great grandchildren! Another stalwart member of the tugboat community is gone and will be greatly missed.

WE TOOK MARGIE'S SISTER, ELLEN, TO THE MUSEUM OF FLIGHT AND SAW WONDERFUL THINGS. HERE IS A WWII BRITISH SPITFIRE THAT SAVED THE NATION FROM THE NAZI HORDES DURING THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN. WINSTON CHURCHILL SAID IT ALL "The gratitude of every home in our Island, in our Empire, and indeed throughout the world, except in the abodes of the guilty, goes out to the British airmen, who, undaunted by odds, unwearied in their constant challenge and mortal danger, are turning the tide of World War by their prowess and devotion. Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few" 20 August 1940.
AS YOU WALK IN THE ENTRANCE TO THE GRAND WWII HALL SCREAMING DOWN AT YOU OUT OF THE CLOUDS IS A DREADED ME 109 MESSERSCHMIDT OF THE GERMAN AIRFORCE.
HERE IS A WWI LIBERTY GAS ENGINE OF 450 H.P. THEY PUT A LOT OF THEM IN BOATS. THE MUSEUM IS A GREAT PLACE TO GO, LOTS OF VERY PERSONAL STUFF. THEY HAD TWO FLIGHT SIMULATORS AND I AM HAPPY TO REPORT THAT MARGIE, ELLEN AND I ALL CRASHED OUR PLANES.
THE NEXT DAY WE WENT TO THE TACOMA SEAPORT MUSEUM AND THAT TOO WAS FUN. BEFORE WE WALKED IN THE DOOR I SHOT A PICTURE OF THE K-SEA TUG "PACIFIC EAGLE" AND HER OIL BARGE. WE GOT TO SEE BILL SOMERS COLLECTION THAT THEY BOUGHT AFTER HIS DEATH. A LOT OF REALLY NEAT STUFF - EVEN A NAME BOARD OFF THE FERRY "BEE LINE" WHO WORKED FOR THE SAME COMPANY AS OUR OLD FERRY THE "AIRLINE".
ON SATURDAY WE DROVE TO MY FAVORITE TOWN, ANACORTES. BACKWARDS IT SPELLS SETROCANA AND THERE WAS A TUG NAMED SETROCANA AND IT WAS REGISTERED IN... YOU GUESSED IT: ANACORTES. ONE OF THE STOPS WE ALWAYS MAKE IS THE MARINE HARDWARE STORE AT THE END OF THE MAIN DRAG. I FOUND A CAT IN A BOX THAT MARGIE JUST COAXED RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. WE MET STEVE COX WHO WORKS THERE. HE IS AN EX-COASTIE TOO - RETIRED COMMANDER - SO I SENT HIM UP A BUNCH OF STUFF INCLUDING A FEW PAGES FROM MY 'YET TO BE PUBLISHED' BOOK "LIFEBOAT STATION SAILOR". WE MADE ALL THE SHOPS AND THE FARMERS MARKET WAS JUST SHUTTING DOWN SO WE MADE THE CIRCUIT AROUND WASHINGTON PARK. IT WAS A SUNNY DAY AND ELLEN GOT TO SEE ALL THE MOUNTAIN RANGES.

THE GULF RIVAL WAS ON STANDBY FOR THE HURRICANE FORCE WINDS THAT WERE EXPECTED TO HIT BELLA BELLA / SHEARWATER... APPARENTLY IN THE LAST BLOW THE DOCKS AND BOATS STARTED GETTING AWAY. WE WERE LUCKY THEY LET US TIE UP AND HIDE THERE..
THE "INGENIKA" WAS STANDING OFF THE PRINCE RUPERT FUEL PIER. IT IS A GOOD LOOKING BOAT, AND IF YOU LOOK CLOSE, YOU CAN SEE THAT THE HOUSE IS ATTACHED TO THE HULL BY RUBBER AND STEEL FEET. I SPOKE TO THE DECKHAND AND HE SAID IT WAS A RECENT CHANGE AND WAS DONE TO REDUCE VIBRATION AND NOISE.

HERE IS PUGET SOUND TUG & BARGE'S NEPTUNE IN THE SHIP CANAL WITH A SHIP ALONGSIDE JUST BEFORE THE FREMONT BRIDGE. SHE WAS THE R.M. WOODWORD A GOVERNMENT VESSEL, THEY TOWED HER UP THE COAST IN THE LATE 1930's AND REBUILT HER INTO THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TUG THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN. THEY INSTALLED A 1050 H.P. FAIRBANKS AND SHE WAS THE SPEED QUEEN OF THE SOUND. IF YOU LOOK AT THE SHORE BEHIND HER YOU WILL SEE THE COAL YARDS AND THE SIGN LADYSMITH WHERE THE COAL CAME FROM. TODAY YOU CAN STILL SEE THE INDENT IN THE SIDE OF THE SHIP CANAL WHERE THE BARGES WERE TIED UP FOR UNLOADING. IN FACT I HAVE A PHOTO OF THE "MASTER" WITH A COAL BARGE IN THE SHIP CANAL THAT I TOOK IN THE EARLY 1950's. PHOTO FROM THE GORDON MEDFORTH COLLECTION.
HERE IS A PHOTO OF THE STEAM TUG "WANDERER". SHE TOWED SAILING SHIPS IN FROM THE CAPE FOR YEARS. I CAN REMEMBER HER WELL OPERATING UNDER FOSS COLORS. IN FACT STAN MADE ME A MODEL OF HER AND IT LIVES IN MY OFFICE. SHE WENT ASHORE IN THE FOG AND THAT HURT HER SO BAD THAT SHE NEVER RECOVERED AND HER BONES ARE BLEACHING ON THE NISQUALLY FLATS. MODEL OF THE RESTORED CANDIAN STEAM TUG "MASTER". THE REAL THING IS STILL RUNNING. I REMEMBER HER MAKING COAL BARGE TOWS INTO THE LAKE. I THINK BYRON BUILT THE MODEL AND THE PHOTO IS FROM DON MEDFORTH - BUT I DON'T KNOW FOR SURE.
UNITED STATES STEAM TUG "PROSPER" IN WINTER. SHE SUNK UP IN EVERETT AND AMERICAN CONSTRUCTION RAISED HER BUT THAT WAS THE END OF HER. I HAVE A GREAT PHOTO OF HER MAKING DECEPTION PASS WITH A LOG TOW AND IT MUST BE A 4 FT SQUARE PICTURE. I BOUGHT IT FROM THE GOOD WILL IN THE 1960's FOR $7.50. HERE IS THE "JAMES DUNLAP" IN TOW OF ONE OF THEIR SMALL POWERFUL HARBOR BOATS ON KIND OF A BLOWY DAY. SCOTT SCHOCH PHOTO.
HOW WOULD YOU LIKE THE RESPONSIBLITY OF GETTING THIS LOG TOW TO THE STORAGE? IT IS VERY HEAVY AND IT WILL ONLY MOVE AT A MILE AND ONE HALF AN HOUR, IF IT GETS WINDY THE WAVES WILL BREAK IT UP INTO LITTLE PIECES THAT HAVE TO BE PICKED UP. YOU WILL BE GREATLY AFFECTED BY CURRENTS. WILL YOU HAVE ENOUGH TIDE TO GET YOU AROUND THE CORNER WHERE YOU WILL BE SAFE WHEN THE TIDE TURNS? WHAT DO YOU DO IF A SIDE STICK BREAKS AND THE TOW STARTS SPEWING LOGS OUT AND YOU CAN'T STOP NOW?
